The shirt

I love the way Emmanuelle Alt wears her shirts, in that half tucked way that seems so easy, but is quite hard to get right. It seems like my shirts are either too long, too short or too fitted. I've been looking for the button-down Isabel Marant Etoile shirt she's wearing for quite a while, but no luck yet. There will be a second Marant delivery at a store here later this week, so I'm hoping I'll find it. It just seems like the kind of shirt I'be been looking for, and I love the colour. For now my Laurence Doligé shirt will have to do, with a Hope belt and boots and J Brand jeans. It's not a button-down so it's pretty much a different look. I've never owned a classic blue Oxford shirt, or a white shirt for that matter, I just can't get it right. It looks too formal, but I love it on other people. I always look for a more relaxed fit and look, and usually go for plaid ones. I've also tried a lovely A.P.C denim shirt, but it didn't look good on me either. This was actually what I wore earlier this week before fall decided to take a break and all of a sudden it's summer again! I've really enjoyed the past couple of days, I think that we'll need it to get through winter.

Update - I've found it!

  1. wow, I think your outfit looks just as good as Alt's. I know what you mean, I find the oxford shirt a tricky thing. It has to be worn the right way and it also has to be the right kind of shirt. I think it was on Closet Visit where someone's boyfriend said she looked like she works at Best Buy (an electronics store) when she wore her oxford shirt, and then when she untucked it, he said she looked like she just got off of work from Best Buy, LOL. I know the feeling ... I used to have a uniform like that when I worked at Intel in college, ha! Gives me very bad memories of all polos and oxford shirts.

  2. I agree with everyone that you look terrific, I really like the tiny checks, and I didn't even notice it wasn't a full button-down. At least you won't have the problem of gaping between buttons at the mid-section...

  3. I think you look absolutely fab. Really like your style. Have a question about your JBrand jeans. Which model do you wear? Is it always the same or do you have different styles/models? Your jeans always look very good on you. I still have to find my perfect style ;-( !!! I´ll keep on looking

  4. Robin- Thanks:)!

S -Haha! I know exctly what you mean! The right kind of shirt is very important!

Prêt à Porter P - Thanks! I know, she looks so good. I've never owned a pair of white jeans, I just know that it wouldn't look good on me. They'd also look like a mess after 5 minutes in my house.

lin - Right, no worries about the buttons, haha! You can really pull off an oxford shirt like no one else, I love the way you wear yours.

Nina - Thanks:)! Well, I wear the skinny and the pencil styles. The ones in this picture are the Pencil, 12". The ones in the Plaid and Dixies post are the Skinny, 10". I like them both, but the skinnies are really quite fitted around the calves and ankles. Some are low waist, some mid waist and one pair has a high waist. I found a post with my favourite pair, Summer stripes, they're the pencil style, Murphy wash and low rise. I actually just got them in mid rise as well, since they're about to fall apart! I only wear J Brand jeans, but I'd like to try some Rag & Bones, I have two pairs of their skinny cords, and I love them! Good luck!

  5. I love this shirt and look on you too! I was eyeing the same exact Etoile shirt on net-a-porter, but didn't act fast enough and it's gone. I am a non-tucker though. I think it doesn't quite go with my proportions - so I always look a bit rumpled and messy since I always wear my button downs untucked.

Out of curiousity, did you ever cave and get the Bettys???

Luckily we're getting a bit more summer here too,
so I haven't had to wear any boots yet.

  6. il était une fois... - Thanks!

mel - Thanks! Laurence Doligé is a pretty new brand for me, but she makes some great shirts. I used to be a non-tucker too, I just recently started tucking, and getting used to it. I think that the Etoile shirt will be mine very soon:)!
Oh, the Bettys. Well, I did cave in, I found them at a Swedish auction site for a very good price, in burgundy. When I got them I thought that they were lovely, but I just couldn't imagine wearing that kind of shoe to the park/playground, and I already have so many nice shoes for work - so I sold them! It was a bit painful, but they just weren't for me. Too much money for sneakers, even if they're the prettiest sneakers ever! How about you, did you cave in?

  7. As stated, you wear this incredibly well, in fact I personally prefer your silhouette to Alt's, as much as I admire her, and the shirt is beautiful, especially the details.
I actually attempted something similar this afternoon - inspired by a new pair of trousers - with the semi tucked shirt thing...however, for some reason the pockets of my trousers decided to stick out somewhat, turning my overall silhouette into a diamond shape, god forbid!

  8. Little Ghost - Thanks:)! I wish I'd find some jeans that fit like hers, slim but still not tight. Maybe it's not the jeans, but the fact that she's skinny and tall, and therefore can get that kind of slouchy skinny look.
Oh, the diamond shape, I know what you mean about the pockets sticking out sometimes.

  10. looking fab and chic as usual! :) i do the half tuck all the time for my shirts...i like slightly billowy shirts with a nice drape for this very reason. what's the material of the IM shirt? i am starting to wear my IM scarf now that it is finally getting chilly here in SH. i must say i love the slightly nubby texture of the silk weave! :)

  11. mel - Rick Owens weges are gret, but the height is too much for me, lol!

miss sophie - Thanks:)! the shirt is cotton, I've actually been able to get my hands on it! I'm wearing my burgundy IM scarf now, I love the texture too!

  12. I love your new IM shirt. It looks marvelous on you. It slouches perfectly on your body and looks great with your black skinny jeans. I saw it on NAP and the measurements seems like it's pretty loose. What size is your shirt?

  13. Wendy Wong - Thanks! I love it too. I found it in a store here. Mine's a sz 1, but I could probably wear a sz 0 as well. The fabric is so nice.
