Monday/knits

Per request :), here's number 11 On my style list, knits. I'm so looking forward to wearing cotton knits instead of wool knits. Because of the long winters here, wool knits are essential in my wardrobe. I used to love cardigans, but after two pregnancies in four years with the daily uniform: skinny maternity jeans- maternity top and cardigan, I feel ambivalent about them. I still think that they're great for dressing down an outfit, especially dresses. I've used crew neck sweaters more this winter. I used to only wear cashmere, because my skin is so senitive, but this winter I've used two mohair sweaters with a top underneath, and they haven't itched a bit. I don't find cashmere hard to care for, I wash them like I do with almost all my tops, in mesh laundry bags, with wool/silk detergent in the gentle cycle. I usually go for basic colours like black, grey and navy when it comes to knits, but there are a few exceptions. The first picture is a glimpse of some of my fall/winter knits, and the second is of the spring/summer knits. There's Hope, Etoile, Acne, Zero Maria Cornejo, Loft design by, Comme des Garcons Play and A.P.C. I don't wear a lot of Acne clothing, which in Sweden is quite unusual, they are the design gods here. I just don't find the design that intriguing, but when it comes to knits they make some great cashmere, cotton and silk basics.

Today I've been wearing an Etoile knit, J Brand jeans and IM booties. The sweater has a back neck opening, but I've worn a tank top as well, it's still pretty chilly.

  1. Your knits collection is rather enviable. The striped IM sweater looks really good on you! I wish I had picked that one up when I had the chance. :)

  2. Your outfit is fantastic, as usual! Ugh, I should have bought that IM striped sweater as well! It sold out instantly, I feel. I love your knit collection! I'm extremely sensitive to wools ... for example, the Etoile mohair knit you have made me itch like crazy. So IM knits are a little hit or miss for me. But I find APC knits really comfortable, even the wool ones.

  3. i love to see collections of clothes. You seem to have a well stocked collection of knits.I only now started incorporating them in my wardrobe.I was a cardi girl before.but I'm always up for a challenge! I still have to own a cashmire sweater.

  4. Jennifer - Thanks! The striped Etoile is one of my favourites, I love the quality of the yarn.
S - Thanks - I actually got it on sale...I'm usually so sensitive too, but it's been fine with a thin top underneath. I agree, A.P.C knits are great.
Angie - I'm glad you like it. I'm guessing you don't need as much wool knits in Greece as we do here? I'd love to wear just cotton knits throughout the year.

  5. you got that on sale? Lucky you! I agree about the cardigans, I'm also a bit ambivalent about them at the moment ... I'll still keep them around, but I'm very much in the mood for crewnecks. They're just so easy to throw on.

I have an off topic question for you ... would you wear flares again (I'm assuming you did at some point in the 1900-2000's :) After seeing pictures of Alt and Geraldine wearing their flares, I suddenly am in the mood for them. Most flares have something like 35 inch inseams, but I saw a pair of petite JBrand love story jeans that are tempting me. They are a bit more "hippy" than the flares I wore in the 90's. You have such a consistent style, so I'm wondering how you feel about flares in general.

  6. S - I used to wear flares all the time, in the late 90's I think. True Religion were my favourites ..Remember that there were lots of fashion reports on flares three or four years ago? They were supposedly coming back, but I don't think they really did. I got an AG jeans pair then, dark wash with a pretty high waist. I've hardly ever worn them. I really love the look (Geraldine, Emanuelle), but I'm not sure I like them on me. I just don't feel as comfortable as when I wear my skinnies. I'm also having a shoe/boots issue when it comes to flares. I don't like them with heels (on me), I think that they look good with converse All Stars or sandals, but those are not my favourite types of shoes. I usually wear mine with sandals and A.P.C short sleeved plaid shirt maybe once or twice every summer:)! I've seen the Love story, and I think that they can look great with a simple shirt or top. I just know that I wouldn't use them as much as my others. Can't really explain why. I also had an Acne pair of flares that was very 70's in a lighter wash, with a high waist, that was great and fit me like a glove, I received so many compliments when I wore them, but I felt so uncomfortable. A friend has them now! So, if you think that you'd feel comfortable, I say go for it! You've got a great sense of style, and I would love to see how you'd style them!
And I'm glad you asked, I love exchanging ideas about these things!

  7. Yes, sometimes it's best to just admire something from afar if you don't feel comfortable wearing it. And yes, they never did come back! Well, I think 4 years ago, it was more about the wide leg jean, right? I loved the look but could never find a pair of wide legs that looked flattering on me. I always felt so short, even wearing a wedge heel. I think the flare is slightly more flattering but also trickier. I agree that shoes are a problem! I think I like them best with a heeled ankle boot, but ballet flats could be cute. I'd really like to try it out with a striped tee and a black jacket. I have a confession to make, I have the black Elali jacket on the way to me. Not entirely sure if it will work, because I might be between sizes, but if it does, I'd really like to try that look! I've been thinking of ways to dress down the jacket. Your outfit with the flares, apc plaid s/s shirt, and sandals sounds extremely cute!

  8. Yes, it was about the wide leg! I agree, the flare is more flattering, I like when jeans are tight in the knee area. And the Elali jacket...I want it too!! It would look fantastic with flares, black ballet flats and a striped top. Probably with skinnies as well...I just found an old picture of the outfit I was referring to. I'll e-mail it!

  9. I think the tricky thing about flares is managing to look modern and not entirely 70's. I feel like Alt and Geraldine (who, ignoring the short skirts and sky high heels, is quickly becoming a major inspiration) do it so well. I'll let you know how the Elali works out when it arrives. For some reason I'm sooo nervous about it. I think I'm between a 1 and a 2 but went with a 2, since you can't fix a too narrow shoulder! I agree it would be cute with skinnies as well. Just thinking of the different possibilities. Can't wait to see the picture of your outfit!

  10. this discussion of whither Flares vs The Skinny is sure to continue as we get closer to fall 2011. ;) i agree with you though that i did it about a decade ago, but this time around i'm likely to sit it out. i'm not super tall and anything that de-emphasizes my ankles tend to shrink me heightwise. and i don't like wearing super chunky platforms or sky high heels to make up for the insanely long inseam that's the usual in flare jeans.

back to your post - i love all your knits! i'm not a knits person myself as for some reason i find them too delicate and prone to pilling (jackets in my mind are more 'durable'). but that stripey IM sweater looks so perfect for all year round! :)

  11. miss sophie - I do seem a bit obsessed :) In reality, I like all kinds of jeans, I'm just trying to figure out if I can still make flares work now. It seemed like a no brainer 10 years ago, it's weird how that happens. Anyway, Garderoben, sorry to have hijacked your comments!

  12. Jealous if your collection! How do you find the quality of the Acne knits? I adore the shape of recent ones but interested to know how they wear before I spend money on them.

  13. Miss Sophie - I feel the same way about flares right now, but you never know, I might change my mind. Love the look though. And thanks! Pilling is invitable, but good quality fabrics are essential. I prefer cotton knits, but they're not warm enough during winter. This is the first time I've used the striped sweater since October!
S- feel free to hijack as much as you want:)!
Asha - I'm happy with the quality of Acne knits. I've had some bad experiences with their basic tops and a jacket, but the knits have been great so far!
