Something special
I've been inspired by Mommy style to get things out of the vault. I usually clean out my close a few times a year, and sell clothes that I don't use anymore. This Hussein Chalayan top always stays, although I hardly ever wear it. It's the "dry clean only" thing again. This top is viscose with silk sleeves, and I think I'd shrink the viscose but not the sleeves if I'd wash it. There's something special about it, and I'm having a hard time letting it go. I got it for New Year's eve 2007, the first new year's celebration with my daughter. Still, it bothers me to keep things I don't wear, just because they're pretty. Should I let it go? Do you have any special hard to let go clothes/shoes?

oh my gosh! It's gorgeous! I have a thing for mixed prints ... it's amazing when two different prints can come together so well. And the sleeves!! But I can totally relate to you ... I have a lot of things that I just don't wear or haven't worn in years, because they are delicate or too pretty or whatever. I was planning on finally getting on ebay this year (but I'm extremely lazy about it), so I've only mentally let go of things, lol. But I have a soft spot, for example, for Dries van Noten, so have a hard time thinking about getting rid of anything I own by him. But you're right, it does seem silly to keep things you don't wear. That's a tough call ...
ReplyDeleteThat is such a lovely top! I can see why you've kept it for so long!
ReplyDeleteI have so many pieces that I just cannot get rid of for sentimental reasons. It's actually a big problem for me because I tend to move a lot (3 moves in 5 years). While I actively try to buy fewer things, I also hope that one day I'll be able to settle down and have a closet large enough to fit the clothes that I wear regularly and the"retired" pieces that I am unable to part with.
I love the print mix of that top. I hate buying dry clean only items as well, and I avoid them - I didn't realise viscose shrinks though; I've machine washed all my viscose things and nothing has happened. If you trust your machine, silk can be thrown in too (I do).
ReplyDeleteI sometimes pass stuff I dont wear anymore but too good to part with to my sisters - the upside is that you can always borrow it back!
It's a lovely top. Maybe I should wash it once in cold water to see what happens. I know I'd use it a lot more if I could wash it. I'll do some research befor I throw it in.
ReplyDeleteLin - I don't have any sisters, otherwise that's a great idea.
Jennifer - I try not to be sentimental about my clothes. I used to. I still have some band t-shirts from high school that I just can't throw out, though!
S - you should definitely get an eBay account! I sell all the time, it's quite easy once you get a routine. I allow myself to buy for the money I "make" selling. I try not to think about what I've paid in the first place...
that is such a gorgeous top. it's actually very totokaelo and very 'right-now' - so you could totally throw it on come spring and summer and i can see it becoming more of a staple piece! i have managed to trim a lot of the excess from my closet, but still have a bit to go before i'm satisfied. i find it hard to give up a few things like 'the first designer handbag i bought'. sigh.
ReplyDeleteMiss Sophie - I can see it becoming more of a staple piece as well, if I could wash it! I found it hard to give up my first desgner bag as well, it was a Marc by MJ, just because I used to love it so much, and I was so happy when I finally could buy it. I've become better at selling all the things I used to love. They were very special to at that time, but now they can be special to someone else.
ReplyDeleteI adore it- I would wear it all the time. I have issues worrying about washing fabrics too, generally because in the past I've always been a "throw it all the in washer, then throw it all in the dryer" sort of girl. I love your blog, now following x
ReplyDeleteAsha - I wish I could wear it all the time! I'm just not sure if I can take the chance and throw it in the washer. Maybe I won't be able to wear it again. Still, the dry clean thing isn't working for me. I'll let you what happens when it finally gets thrown in;)! And thanks!!
ReplyDeleteOh! I'm in love with your shirt! If you did decide to let it go, it would sell in a second (to me, in a perfect world!).
ReplyDeleteI found you through Jennifer's blog. Your style is lovely, so clean but with an artistic twist. I would love to visit your eBay page; if these images are any indication, your clothes are highly covetable!
katie
Katie - hi, and thanks, that's a really nice compliment! I just caught a glimpse of your blog, it's fascinating, will read more later! I'll let you know if I decide to sell the shirt, and if I list anything on ebay anytime soon!/sara
